How this data is sourced

A specification database is only worth the sourcing behind it. Everything here is traceable to a named source with the date we checked it, and where two sources disagree we keep both rather than quietly picking one.

The rules

A gap is better than a guess

When we cannot verify a value we publish — and list the field as unverified on the product page. There are 3782 such fields right now. A database that invents plausible numbers is worse than no database, because you cannot tell which half to trust.

Every figure names its source

5398 source records across 357 products, each with a URL, a type and the date we checked it. The full list sits at the bottom of every product page, not in a footnote.

Disagreements are recorded, not resolved

77 products carry a field where two sources state different values. We publish the one we trust and keep the other beside it with a note. Manufacturers restate old figures across model generations more often than you would expect.

Spec graphics are read twice

Some makers print their specifications only as an image on the product page. Two different models transcribe each image independently, and only the lines both read identically are used. Every figure taken from an image cites the image itself.

Metric is canonical

Weights are stored in grams and lengths in millimetres. Imperial figures are converted, and the conversion is recorded on the source. That way a tool specified in ounces and one specified in grams are genuinely comparable.

One vocabulary for tools

81 tool types in a single taxonomy with specialisations rolling up into their parents, so a search for pliers finds a tool that only ever says "needlenose". The manufacturer's own wording is kept alongside, verbatim.

Prices are data, not a call to action

MSRP is treated like any other sourced field, and cost per tool is derived from it. It does not affect how products are ranked or described.

Source types, strongest first

manufacturer
The maker’s own current product page, including spec graphics printed on it. The default and the strongest.
manufacturer-manual
A manual or spec sheet published by the maker. Often the only place a blade length appears.
official-catalog
A regional or archived catalogue from the maker. Used when a model has left the main site.
retailer
A specialist retailer. Weaker, and labelled as such. Used mostly for discontinued models.
independent-measurement
A published measurement by someone other than the maker.
community
Owner-supplied, held to the same sourcing standard as everything else.
multitooldb-measurement
Weighed or measured by us.
